Timber framing, the way it was done
Timber framing is one of the oldest and most durable building techniques in Northern Europe. Timber joined with mortises, wooden pegs, and precise hand-cut joints. No bolts. No steel plates. Just wood holding wood, as it has for centuries.
Together with The Northmen
Øhavsladen is built together with carpenters with a background at The Northmen in Latvia, one of Europe's most respected environments for traditional timber craft. The techniques are the same ones that raised Danish barns two hundred years ago: winter-felled timber, axe and chisel, and joints cut to fit on site.
Living heritage
Denmark has thousands of timber frame buildings, and very few people who can build them. Every time an old barn disappears, some of the knowledge that raised it disappears too. Øhavsladen turns that around: here the building starts from scratch, with the old techniques, and the knowledge is passed on to apprentices, course participants, and everyone watching.
